When you eat late at night, your body produces a whole bunch of hormones, so your body starts to think it’s supposed to be awake. Not to mention you’re wasting energy digesting all that food. The result is that you don’t get a good nights rest. All that to say, don’t eat late at night regularly. It isn’t good for you. Personally, I don’t have a problem eating at night here and there.. but I am trying to cut back in order to remain healthy. In general, try not to eat if you are planning on going to bed soon. Give your body at least 3 hours to digest everything before hunkering down for the night.
And if you do eat at night, try not to eat lots of sugar.
Do you know what “growth hormones” are? Me either. Well… most of your body’s growth hormones/hormone (is that supposed to be plural?) are/is produced when you first go to sleep. Eating sugar late at night will disrupt your body’s production of growth hormone. (I iz a big boy! I iz smart!!) That means you’ll be a midget!!! AHHHH!!!!! No, just kidding. I love midgets. The growth hormone, yes, is responsible for growth, but seriously.. is it unhealthy not to have it?
If you have low growth hormone(s?) for a long time, you can get belly fat, low muscle repair, bone loss (Not sure what that means. What? Do we lose bones all of a sudden? Holy crap!), fatigue, memory dysfunction, joint pains, muscle pains, loss of flexibility, and early aging.
So if you want to live long (or at all, from the sound of that list), avoid sugar at night.
Instead of junk food, keep things like pretzels, fruit, cottage cheese, and nonfat yogurt in your house.
A good way to burn lots of calories is exercise. Duh. Everybody knows that. What a lot of people don’t know, however, is that you can teach your body to burn more calories when you aren’t doing anything! How? Well, to burn extra calories, you need a fast metabolism. And if you eat small, well balanced, nutritional snacks every three to four hours, you teach your body to deal with the food it has faster so that it can get ready for the next meal. So instead of skipping breakfast, eating a small lunch and then gorging your self at dinner, eat a small breakfast, a small lunch, a small snack in the middle of the afternoon, and a small dinner. And probably a small snack some time in the evening. Just be sure you don’t eat a lot during these meals. Remember, you’re eating more often now.
Another good idea for when you are hungry late at night is to eat Negative Calorie Foods. These are foods that burn more calories just digesting the food than your body actually gets from the food itself. That means instead of storing all these calories that you will in now way use (What? Were you planning on exercising at 3 o’clock in the morning? Riiiiiiight…) Anyway, here is a list of Negative Calorie foods:
Veggies – Artichokes, Asparagus, Broccoli, Carrots, Cauliflower, Celery, Endive, Lettuce, Peas, Spinach
Fruit – Apricots, Cantaloupe, figs, grapefruit, Huckleberries, Mangoes, Oranges, Pineapple
