Mine is the night, with all her stars

4 February, 2010 (11:00am) | Blog | 2 comments

“Every aspect of Western culture needs a new code of ethics — a rational ethics — as a precondition of rebirth.” ~Ayn Rand

And yet, there is no precondition for spring! Night does not hold back the dawn! Winter does not hold a hearing to see if Summer is good and right. Who can control the seasons? Who can master death? If death is a surety, why not rebirth?

“Night, the beloved.  Night, when words fade and things come alive.  When the destructive analysis of day is done, and all that is truly important becomes whole and sound again.  When man reassembles his fragmentary self and grows with the calm of a tree.”  ~Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

There is a silent beauty in the way that the universe treats death. It is revered, yes, even feared. And yet, it is through death that life is allowed to flourish.

“I often think that the night is more alive and more richly colored than the day.” ~Vincent Van Gogh

“There they stand, the innumerable stars, shining in order like a living hymn, written in light.” ~N.P. Willis

Dawn

The Sun rises and the day breaks! Behold, the magnificence! Our lives begin. Working, walking, doing, loving, all by the light of life. It is a game that all take too seriously, yet none take seriously enough. Do we realize the direction the current is flowing? We all play a part. Every man has his job on this playing field we find ourselves. Have we really grasped the elegance of our existence?

However long the night, the dawn will break.

Eating at 3:00 AM

2 February, 2010 (5:18pm) | Blog, Late Night Tips | 1 comment

Nachos Popcorn Crackers Toast Ice Cream Orange Juice Eggs Candy Quesadilla Coffee Ramen Cheezits Burritos Donuts…

When you eat late at night, your body produces a whole bunch of hormones, so your body starts to think it’s supposed to be awake. Not to mention you’re wasting energy digesting all that food. The result is that you don’t get a good nights rest. All that to say, don’t eat late at night regularly. It isn’t good for you. Personally, I don’t have a problem eating at night here and there.. but I am trying to cut back in order to remain healthy. In general, try not to eat if you are planning on going to bed soon. Give your body at least 3 hours to digest everything before hunkering down for the night.

And if you do eat at night, try not to eat lots of sugar.

Do you know what “growth hormones” are? Me either. Well… most of your body’s growth hormones/hormone (is that supposed to be plural?) are/is produced when you first go to sleep. Eating sugar late at night will disrupt your body’s production of growth hormone. (I iz a big boy! I iz smart!!) That means you’ll be a midget!!! AHHHH!!!!! No, just kidding. I love midgets. The growth hormone, yes, is responsible for growth, but seriously.. is it unhealthy not to have it?

Um.. yes.

If you have low growth hormone(s?) for a long time, you can get belly fat, low muscle repair, bone loss (Not sure what that means. What? Do we lose bones all of a sudden? Holy crap!), fatigue, memory dysfunction, joint pains, muscle pains, loss of flexibility, and early aging.

So if you want to live long (or at all, from the sound of that list), avoid sugar at night.

Instead of junk food, keep things like pretzels, fruit, cottage cheese, and nonfat yogurt in your house.

A good way to burn lots of calories is exercise. Duh. Everybody knows that. What a lot of people don’t know, however, is that you can teach your body to burn more calories when you aren’t doing anything! How? Well, to burn extra calories, you need a fast metabolism. And if you eat small, well balanced, nutritional snacks every three to four hours, you teach your body to deal with the food it has faster so that it can get ready for the next meal. So instead of skipping breakfast, eating a small lunch and then gorging your self at dinner, eat a small breakfast, a small lunch, a small snack in the middle of the afternoon, and a small dinner. And probably a small snack some time in the evening. Just be sure you don’t eat a lot during these meals. Remember, you’re eating more often now.

Another good idea for when you are hungry late at night is to eat Negative Calorie Foods. These are foods that burn more calories just digesting the food than your body actually gets from the food itself. That means instead of storing all these calories that you will in now way use (What? Were you planning on exercising at 3 o’clock in the morning? Riiiiiiight…) Anyway, here is a list of Negative Calorie foods:

Veggies – Artichokes, Asparagus, Broccoli, Carrots, Cauliflower, Celery, Endive, Lettuce, Peas, Spinach

Fruit – Apricots, Cantaloupe, figs, grapefruit, Huckleberries, Mangoes, Oranges, Pineapple

Meat – Abalone Clams, Crab, Flounder, Mussels, Shrimp

Ivory Harp — An Artists Community

12 January, 2010 (12:42pm) | Blog | No comments

Do you have a skill? Something that you do really well… most people have one. Sometimes it’s music, or photography, or writing, or painting, or something that is very obviously “art”. Well, I believe that art is more than that. Art can be anything that you care about that you put a part of yourself into when you make it. Coffee can be art, little homemade things can be art, anything, really, can be a form of art. Everyone has something that they are good at, and I want to help those people find that thing and develop it.

I am trying to get Southern Oregon a bit more involved in itself than it has been in the past. There are way too many talented, passionate people who hate it here, because they are being stifled. Let’s network together and share our art!

This idea of mine is called Ivory Harp. The purpose of Ivory Harp is to connect artists together and put musical talent towards international need and commercial culture. Check us out at ivoryharp.com! And add us on myspace! myspace.com/ivoryharp.

Musicians
I know recording engineers, music teachers, bands, venues, and a LOT of musicians. My personal passion is for music, and for helping musicians get their art exposed to the world. Even if you don’t have a band, or you aren’t that good, or you just have a bunch of riffs, and no way to turn it into a full song, I think I could help. Maybe you just don’t have time to start a band, but you still play a little bit at home and whatnot… you can still be a part of something amazing. Imagine if you could sit in on your favorite bands practices and give your input on various song ideas and riffs, chord progressions, lyrics. That’s what this is all about! Hit me up! I want to meet you!

Entrepreneurs
Do you have something that you can make that you want to use to make a little extra money? Do you design clothing, or make necklaces? Do you have a pottery wheel? Can you crotchet? I am a web designer, and I work in the internet marketing world. I am trying to build up a network of local artist to showcase on various sites and help them make money. Look at the economy, we all are in need. Why spend all your time working at a job that you aren’t enjoying when you could take an extra couple hours making something beautiful, and then present it t the rest of the valley? That would even help the local economy if it got that big! Help me help you help us! :)

Passionate Individuals
I am trying to find people who care about making a difference in other peoples lives and in the world. If you’re reading this and you like where I’m coming from, I want to meet you. Every single person I have talked to has something that brings them joy, and it’s different for all of us! This idea is beyond just music or the arts. It can apply to every aspect of life. People are starving for something to live for. Something to put their heart and soul into. Musicians are lucky because putting your soul into music makes sense. But say… business people? How do you put your soul into a business and make it beautiful? It’s tricky, but it can be done.

When you really truly care about something, you give it your all and it is the most beautiful thing we can do on this earth. I would love to meet you and get to know your personal passions. Let’s have coffee sometime!

Caramelized Shots

22 May, 2009 (1:27pm) | Blog | 2 comments

I just discovered this new thing a couple weeks ago called caramelized shots. What you do is you add a packet of raw sugar to the ground in the portafilter and run the shots through that. It gives them a naturally sweetened taste without masking the rich coffee flavor. They’re best when you just drink the straight shots. Mmmmmmm….. I’m gonna go make one right now…

My life so far.

21 May, 2009 (2:31pm) | Blog | No comments

The last couple weeks have been pretty busy for me. I’ve been doing a lot of recording with my band and writing a lot of songs. That’s pretty much my life right now. I work, play music, record music, I sleep, repeat. Sometimes I eat. If I can.

So, you all should add my band on Myspace and stay updated as to when we have concerts and when our album comes out. http://www.myspace.com/sinkingarmada

Peace.

Always get a quote

1 April, 2009 (4:38pm) | Blog | No comments

So, I’ve had my brothers car for a while and I’ve sort of been in charge of getting it fixed. Anyway, I called up a towing company and talked to them about coming to get the car and take it to the mechanic place thing. During the convo, I asked about how much it would cost, and they told me $76.50. What the crap, why are tow trucks so friggin expensive? I mean, come on! But wait, it gets better. The dude finally showed up and looked at the car for a bit, after which he told me it was going to be $130, or something like that. I’m like… “uhh… what?” I told him that they had quoted me $70-something, and he knew right away that they had said $76.50. And he said he would go with what they quoted me. It was weird, cause he totally already knew what price they had quoted me on the phone. It was almost like he was just trying to see if he could get away charging me more. So… just so you all know, always get a quote beforehand, just in case it’s cheaper.

Excuses and Updates

31 March, 2009 (4:10pm) | Blog | 4 comments

So, the plan was, once I got my new laptop I’d be all about posting and updating all the time, but obviously I totally haven’t been posting. So, I’m not going to make any sort of promise that I’ll be updating any time soon, but I AM going to be thinking about it. That counts for something, right? Anyway, here’s a little bit of an update on what’s been going on in my life…

My best friend and I are making a movie. It’s called I’m On Fire and it’s about a crazy homeless dude who suffers from hallucinations.

Also, my band, Armada, is getting ready to release our first album, the Octephant. Plu, our first show is coming up on Mothers Day in Alba Park. So, if you live in, or around Medford, OR, you should totally come to our concert!

Moving Again

14 January, 2009 (11:21pm) | Blog | 4 comments

I’m moving again this weekend. I know I just moved last month, but my roommates lease is up and they want a new place, so I’m moving with them. Our new house is amazing. My favorite part is that it has a deck on the second floor. Also, it has walk-in closets and each room has its own bathroom. Yeeaayah!
